“TAX ON DEATH” STIRS UNDERTAKERS.
A JUDGE’S ALLEGATION. Branding as unjustifiable and slanderous an allegation made from his bench by Judge Wilson R. Gay of the King County Superior Court that Wasnington undertakers have combined to impose a “tax on death,” the Washington State Funeral Directors’ Association challenged the jurist to prove his claim. In an official letter, Alex. Turnbull of Spokane, secretary of the association, demanded that the Judge call a special Grand Jury to investigate undertaking methods. Turnbull agrees to deposit a sufficient sum to cover the expenses of the investigation if Judge Gay Yvill do likeYvise, the loser to pay the costs. The letter charges Judge Gay _ with being “the only probate Judge in Washington • who arrogates to himself the right to fulfill duties of administrator, executor and probate Judge of estates.” The' association denies Judge Gay s statement that undertakers rvillingly bury a certain class for lOdol, and supply the same merchandise and services for 150dol. to 400dol. if there is an estate.
