WINDING UP THE SEASON.
A PLEASANT FUNCTION
The Poverty Bay Hockey Association last night wound up tbeir season with a very successful and well attended euchre party in Wootton’s rooms. The euclire tournament occupied the earlier portion of the evening, and the prizes were awarded as follows:—Ladies, Ist, Miss E. Manning; gentlemen, Ist. Mr. Cook ; booby prizes. Miss Hyson and Mr. S. Hird. • At the conclusion of the tournament supper was _ served, and the chairman of the association called upon the Mayor, Mr. Wm. Pettie, to present the trophies won during the season. Before doing so he referred briefly to the progress made during the season, and said that so far as hockey was concerned it had been one of the most successful seasons on record. Among the tilings they hoped to have next year were more grounds, and it was also hoped that it would be found possible to send a men’s representative team on Tour.
Mr. Pettie said that before proceed? ing to present the trophies lie wished to acknowledge the honor the association had done him in making him their president, and as his time' - had been much taken up during the past two or three months, he regretted that lie was unable to come on to the ground to witness the matches played. *“ He, however, always took a great interest in the game, and hoped to be able to identify himself more closely with it in the future.
The first trophy he had to present was to Miss Grace Warren, for the best player in the seven-a-side tournament. Other trophies were presented as follows:—Miss May Reddell, best back; Miss G. Neil son , most improved player, trophy presented by Mrs R. 'N. Jones. Thursday competition: In an appropriate speech his Worship presented the shield to Mr. O. R. Olsen, captain of the West End Club, which won it this year, and Mr. Olsen responded, expressing the hope that some other club would win the shield, next year. Saturday competition: His Worship congratulated the Civil Service Club on having won the competition. Ladies’ competition: The trophy presented by Mr. A. Cox was not yet to hand, but his Worship hoped that it would he publicly presented to the winners, the High School team. Seven-a-side tournament: The trophies in tliis case had not come to nand, but they would he forwarded to the winners, namely, Kowhai and West End, at an early date.
The Ross Shield, presented by Messrs Ross and Co., of Napier, for competition among ladies’ clubs, was then presented to Miss Moore, captain of the team which won the shield at Napier. Mr. Pettie congratulated the ladies who went forth to barite for it and had been successful, and he hoped it woiild create a spirit of keen and healthy rivalry between the districts. Mr. R. Anderson and Mr. J. Doyle responded on behalf of the ladies.
