A year ago the excess of exports over imports was close on £6,000,000, while for the year to 30th June last the excess was some £2,500,000, and the continued decline in exports makes it appear that this balance will be reduced at the close of the current quarter. It is impossible to arrive at an exact balance in these tilings owing to the effect of lean money coming in in tlie form of goods, but fi om the very high total reached by our imports it would appear that a measure of caution is advisable on the part of our importers.” At evening time, just as the sun dips o’er the western hills, says the “Auckland Star,” the weary traveller, who, perforce, has ridden painfully and slowly for weary miles over the long bogs (misnamed roads) which lead from Otamabea to Wairca, meets with a startling experience. " At the head of the long stretch of plains where the bush at the foot of the lulls wraps an element of romance about the locality, suddenly there strikes upon his ear a positive roar as from a mighty waterfail, accompanied by a continual shrill and piercing scream. There are ten or more acres of closely-growing, tall titree at tlie spot, and this is thronged with _ what appears to be millions "of starlings, which, with their wings and cries, are the innocent cause of the stranger’s weird experience. When the whole flock rise together they make an astonishing noise. If a single tree occupying twenty-five square feet- holds one hundred starlings, which is a very small estimate, there would be a total of over two.-millions of them over tlie ten acres. All who are interested in machinery will appreciate the display of oil and steam engines, boilers, Burgon sheepshearing machines.
