The Defence Department called for tenders for eighty-eight thousand'yards of waterproof khaki cloth, hut- only thirty-two thousand yards were tendered for. Failing to obtain the material in Australia- the Department intends to call outside tenders. PROFITABLE RAILWAY'S. (Received Sept. 2S, 12.10 a.m.) ADELAIDE, Sept. 27. For the year ended June the railways earned £2,o4l,ooo*jnid the working expenses were £1,257,000.
