THE RUGBY GAME.

WELLINGTON DEFEATS SOUTH-

LAND. IPER PRESS ASSOCIATION.j INVERCARGILL, Sept. 27. The fourteenth interprovincial Rugbymatch Wellington v. Southland was pLayed this afternoon in cold and windy weather. The visitors were much too clever for the local men and woj? by 27 points to 9. The Southland forwards, for the most part, held their own, but the backs compared most unfavorably with the visitors. In the first spell Wellington put up 16 points to 3, Evenson, Wilson, F. Roberts and Cunningham scoring tries, and E. Roberts converting one and McFarlane another. Southland began attacking strongly in the second half and Mitchell scored, Martin failing with the kick. Wellington then took command and added 11 points, Roberts, Cunningham and Evenson scoring and Houlihan converting one try. •

Tli© usual weekly meeting of the Management Committee of the Poverty Bay Cricket Association was held at the British Empire Hotel last night. There were present: Messrs A. R. Gatland in the chair), P. Allen, E. W. Harvey, A. S. Seymour, B. C. Jeffreys, y. Somervell, F. Walker, and J. P. Mc_ Lislcy (hon. secretary). It was decided to play a match against the Waingake Club at Victoria Domain on Saturday, October 28th. The election of committees for the year resulted as follows: —'Ground, Mr Gatland; postponement committee, Messrs Seymour, Gatland and Walker; sole selectors, (senior grade) Mr 0. R. Olsen; (junior grade), Mr James P. McLiskey; entertainment committee, Messrs Gatland, Seymour and Walker.

WELLINGTON RACING CLUB. THE ANNUAL MEETING. [PER PRESS ASSOCIATION.J WELLINGTON, Sept. 27. At the annual meting of the Wellington Racing Club the chairman, Mr Haicourt, spoke at some length on interference with sport and _ the formation of the Sports Protection League. He called on members to enlist the. services of as many members as possible, and to cast their votes against all candidates at the election who would not subscribe to their views. He mentioned that in consequence of the heavy increase in the Government taxes, and the heavy financial obligations of the club, the stewards had deemed it wise during the past season to curtail the prize money. The indebtedness was roughly about £IB,OOO, and between £40,000 and £50,000 had been spent on the course since the club removed to Trentham in 1905. _ A resolution was unanimously earned in favor of the appointment of stipendiary stewards.
