SEWERAGE CONNECTIONS.
EXEMPTIONS TO BE GRANTED. At last night’s meeting of the Borugh Gduncil, Cr. Darton moved, in accordance with notice, that steps be taken to repeal part of streets by-laws in relation to sewers- He pointed out that if property owners had to pay for putting in sewers, it would bring the price of private roads up to £SO a chain, which would prevent people from cutting up their properties. The by-law was at present harsh and unworkable. The Council should find the pipes. Cr. Sawyer seconded the motion. Cr. Collins remarked that the trouble was that the by-law was too- premature ; it was impossible to carry it out. It was the duty of the Council to l protect the public. In the meantime*, Until the sewers were laid the by-law should not be brought into operation. Cr. Darton maintained that* if the Council put in the water they should, put in. the sewerage connections. Cr. Bright suggested that exemption should be granted where there were no sewerage connections. He moved an amendment to this effect, which was seconded by Cr. BrownCr. Smith supported the amendment, stating that they did not want to be framing by-laws continually. The amendment was carried. Cm. Bright, Smith*, Webb, Collins. Brown a nd the Mayor voting for, and Crs. Darton, Wildish, Wade and Sawyer against.
