Tlie 24 hours’ notice served on the owners of small steamers by the Guild having expired without an agreement being arrived at, the mates of the steamer Putiki came ashore at midday. It is a question whether it is lawful for them to do so, as Greymouth is a river port. Captain Wahlstrom is waiting for instructions before signing a discharge. The firemen and sailors have requested a rise from the Ist of November. Failing compliance, a general strike is probable. SEAMEN’S UNION DEMANDS. BASIS OF NEW AGREEMENT. WELLINGTON, Oct. 4. The Australasian Federated Seamen’s Union lias formulated its claims for a new agreement'with the shipowners in New Zealand. The new rates of pay demanded are: Boatswains £lO per month for a passenger steamer, and other steamer £9; quarter-masters and lamp-trimmers or able seamen £8; lamp-trimmers and able seamen combined, £9 ; ordinary seamen £6 (first class) and £5 (second class), donkeymen £l4 for six hours’ watch, and £ll for four hour watch; firemen or greasers or •storekeeper £l3 for six-hour watch, and £lO for six-hour watch, and £lO for four-hour watch; trimmers £ll tor six-hour watch, and £8 for four-hour watch: boy £2 10s (second class) and £3 (first class). Overtime is to range from Is 6d to 2s per ho in - , and preference of employment to financial members of the Union is stipulated.
