THE PARNELL SEAT.

MR. MOSS OPENS HIS CAMPAIGN

(Per Press Association.) AUCKLAND, Oct. 6

Mr. E. G. B. Moss, the Opposition candidate for Parnell, opened his campaign to-night. Referring to the retirement of Air. F. Lawry, he said that if anyone deserved a cali to the Upper House Mr. Lawry did. He taxed Sir J. Findlay with insincerity in declaring when he came to Auckland that he was not aware Mr. Lawry was going to retire. Sir John, he said, was well known in the South as the author of a book on “Humbug,” and he quoted the following passages:— Page 5: “Spouter, the politician who fools the crowd with glorious and gigantic lies.” Page 39: ‘ ‘How luck will make a millionaire and silence a sage, hut ho who aspires to be a leader of men must perforce be a humbug.” (Laughter.) He was an Oppositionist because lie did not beliove in the Government, and Mr. Massey was an honest man. The candidate received an excellent hearing, and was accorded a vote of thanks and confidence. Mr. Moss, in reply, promised to shake things up. SIR JOHN FINDLAY’S CANDIDATURE. WELLINGTON, October 6. Sir John Findlay, accompanied by Lady Findlay, leaves for Auckland tomorrow. He opens his campaign in Parnell on Monday. He will leave .Auckland on Wednesday night, in order to take his place in the Council next week. R iccarton. CHRISTCHURCH, October 6. Mr T. L. Drummond, who is contesting the Riccarton seat as an Independent Labor candidate, addressed a fair meeting last night. He advocated borrowing for development purposes, taxation of all public amusements for the support of charities, the right to work, and concessions in taxation to men with families. On the licensing question he favored a bare majority. He was accorded a vote of thanks. Wellington Suburbs. WELLINGTON, October 6. Air R. B. Williams announces that he has withdrawn from the Suburbs election contest owing to business reasons.
