It was intended io close the season last Saturday wee* hut at the wish of members the committee of the Poverty Bay Golf Club agreed to keep the links open fox another fortnight or so. A bogey match was arranged for Saturday afternoon, and attracted a good entry. The links were in fine ordex-, and consequently good cards were returned, the colonel coming in for a rather rough handling. The result of the competition was that G. W. YVillock, • W. H. Irvine, R. U. Burke, and J. Busby tied for first place, each being 2 up. The following were the results : G. W. Willock (scr.), 2 up. W. H. Irvine (6), 2 up. R. U. Burke (10), 2 up. J. Busby (12), 2 up. W. Harry Stewart, the local professional, has received a three years’ engagement with the Napier Golf Club as coach and general supervisor of the links, and leaves to take up his new duties on Sunday next. During his stay here Stewart has demonstrated that he is a first-class coach, and general regret has been expressed that he. is leaving Gisborne. However, he will have more scope for his undoubted abilities m Hawke’s Bay, as golf is played all the year round on the Waiohiki links. AUCKLAND CLUB CHAMPIONSHIP (Per Press Association.) AUCKLAND, Oct. 7. In the final of the Auckland 1 Golf Club’s championship to-day over thirtysix holes, J. C. Burns beat W. B. Colbeck by one up. The New Zealand Ladies’ Golf Championship meeting was brought to a close yesterday on the Heretaunga links, which were in perfect order. A very large number of spectators made a journey from town, the special train being crowded. The weather was again beautifully fine. The great game was the finish of the championship between Miss Gould (Ot'ago) and Miss L. Brandon (Wellington). Quite an army of spectators followed the game, among those who tramped round the links being
Lord Islington and General Godley. The match gave rise ..to a very keen battle, which continued to the last hole. Neither player was at her best, nevertheless very few mistakes were made. Tlie first hole was halved in 5, Miss Brandon taking the next in 5 to 7. The 3rd was halved- in 4, Miss Brandon taking the next by 5 to 4, and the fifth in a perfect 3 to 4. The Otago lady now showed improved form, taking the 6th in 6 to 7, the 7th in a like score, and the Bth (the longest hole in the links) also in 6to 7. This made them all square. Miss Gould showed pretty play at the 9th, and holed out in 4 to- 5; but the local player, thanks to a good putt, holed tlie lOtli in 4 to 5, making them again all square. Miss Brandon won the lltli in 6 to 7, the next being halved in 5. The 13th fell to Miss Gould, _ thus again making it all square, the interest now being very keen. The local player won the next in a perfect 3 to 4 by the aid of a three yards’ putt, but at tlie 15tli Miss Brandon, failing to. carry the high bank with her tie shot, lost in 4 to 5 all square. At the 16tli, thanks to laying herself a bad stymie, Miss Gould failed, while the 17th was halved in an excellent 5, Miss Brandon being dormy. At the 18th the Otago lady extinguished her chance by badly topping her drive, and second. She made a great effort to recover with a magnificent cleek shot to tlie green. Miss Brandon, however, playing in very correct style, holed out in 5 to 6, winning by 2 up, amidst enthusiastic cheers for both players. Subsequently the prize was presented by Lord Islington, wlio congratulated Miss Brandon on winning the- coveted honor, and condoled with the losers. The links, he said, were in fine order, and the management had been admirable, while a fine sporting spirit had been shown by all the competitors, who, he was sure, would 1 remember the seventeenth annual tournament with very great pleasure. Afterwards the Wellington Ladies’ Golf Club entertained the visitors to a big afternoon tea. During the morning a Consolation Handicap was played, Miss Brewster winning in the “under 16 handicap” class, while Mrs O’Meara and Mrs Burnett Stuart tied in the “over 16 handicap” division. ‘
