POUAWA. WHANGARA SCHOOL PICNIC. rPROM ODE OWN CORBESI ONDENT.I The Whangara Native School picnic took place on Saturday last, in beautiful weather, at the same place as last year, again kindly granted for the occasion by Mr. Kepa Leach. A large number of pleasure-seekers turned up to enjoy the day’s outing, and were entertained to a treat which they thoroughly appreciated. The subscription lists "were in the hands of Miss N. Shaw, Masters Kerehone, Mackey, John Reid, and Alick Cockburn, and a goodly sum was forthcoming, which, being judiciously invested, resulted _in an ample supply for everyone, including toys galore' for the little ones. 'As usual'sports and games formed the main feature of the day, each item on the programme being keenly contested, and every placed competitor -receiving a substantial prize. There was no disappointment, as every child present got a toy of some sort. Before dinner, which was served at midday, Mr. Hera Peanga, on behalf of the committee, expressed the pleasure at seeing so many present, and hoped the company would * thoroughly enjoy themselves. Mr Fraser, with many willing helpers, were untiring in their efforts to entertain, and deserve the gratitude of all present. It is mainly through the efforts of Mr. Fraser, assisted by the committee, that these gatherings are so popular. After a hearty tea in the evening everyone wended their separate ways home, their only regret being that the day was so short.
