A mail for Wellington and South, per Ripple, closes at 4 p.m. to-day. There was a clean sheet so far ns police matters were concerned at the Magistrate’s Court yesterday. Commencing to-day the postal receiver at the corner of Ormond Read and Fox Street will be cleared daily at 10.30 a.m. and 4.30 p.m. The members of the Tarulieru Gun Club will meet at Makar aka to-morrow to compete for a handsome trophy presented by Mr C. W. Johnson. The shoot is to commence at 1.30 p.m. sharp. Mr. W. G. Slicrratt has been appointed to represent the Agricultural Society in horse classes in which it is necessary for the Society to bo that exhibits are in foal, and Mr. W. D- Bell will act in a. similar capacity in the cattle cVassro. The Gisborne Scottish Society held a very enjoyable social evening in Wootton’s rooms last night when a large number of members and their friends were present. Musical and elocutionary items were rendered by the following"; Miss Wilson, Mesdames Park, Howard, Paltridge. Rhinesmith, Rev. W. Grant, ])r. Porter, and Messrs McClymont, Meikle, Stewart and Mitchell. Mr D. Groig danced a. step dance,, the accompaniment being rendered by Mr McIntyre. The Bazaar will be opened by Dr. Cleary, Bishop or Auckland, on Tuesday, and the large crowd of holiday-makers should thoroughly enjoy the entertainment is is certain to afford. Several of the more important suburbs of Sydney have under consideration the question of adopting improved Graetzen inverted gas lamps ior public lighting instead or electricity. The Glebe Council, for mtsanoe, recently disregarded its electricity proposals in favor of entering into a contract ior the supply of 460 of the new gas street lamps, each of which has a guaranteeu minimum of 100 c.p. These new amps, it appears, are now ousting electric street lighting in portions of 1 arts. Berlin and London. It is expected by the Glebe Council that the installation of the new gas lamps will represent a saving of 25 per cent on its funds over the cost of electric lamps of the same candle power. Inspector of Fire Brigades, slated that m the matter of insurances, Gisborne was the largest loser in the Dominion on a basis of population.
