BOWLING.

OPENING OF THE SEASON. THE GISBORNE CLUB. Tlie Gisborne Bowling Club opened their green for the 1911-12 season yesterday- The weather, though dull, remained fine-,- and the green was in. excellent eider for the initial games. There was a pleasing display of bunting, which enhanced the scene, and Messrs Vita. Bros.’ orchestra played a number of selections during the afternoon. By the time the official opening took place, there was a very large attendance of boAvlers and friends, the ladies turning out in strong force. Mr. W. Pettie, the President of the Club, extended a hearty welcome to the visitors. He said he was pleased that they had been able to meet under such favorable circumstances, for a little earlier in the day he had some doubt as to whether the weather would remain sufficiently fine to allow them to open the green that afternoon. He was pleased ho see such a large number present, and especially sucb a large gathering of their lady friends, for itl showed they still maintained an interest in the club. His Lordship the Right Rev. Dr. Cleary had also attended, but had been called away to another function., and ho apologised for His Lord-shin’s absence at the opening ceremony. His Lordship hoped, however, to visit the green, on some future occasion. He (the speaker) was also pleased to see so many visiting bowlers present- They included some from outside the district, and lie welcomed them heartily, as they were always pleased to see. them. There were also representatives of the Turangalnui Club, and some of the Gisborne members were attending at the. Turanganui green, where an opening ceremony was being hold. This showed the good feeling that existed between the two Clubs, and ho trusted it would always be maintained. He hoped the competitions between the two clubs would be continued in the same way as in years gone by. In conclusion. Mr. Pettie referred to the- splendid state of the green, and paid a high tribute to tire, work of the ground committee and the caretaker. He sincerely trusted the members would have a happy time and enjoy themselves during the season. Some 40 or 50 new members were joining the turn local clubs for the coming season, and this demonstrated the interest that was being manifested in the. game-. Mr. Pettie then rolled down the jack and declared the green open. Throe cheers xvere given, for the Gisborne Club, Turanganui Club, and the President. The Turanganui Bowling Club also opened their season yesterday. The green was in excellent order, and there was a large attendance of visitors. _ including very many ladies and over sixty bowlers engaged in play. The pavilion was tastefully furnished, and presented a very attractive appearance. Mr. C. J. Bennett, President of the Club, expressed his pleasure at seeing such a large attendance of ladies and visitors and lie was very pleased that Bishop Cleary of Auckland, was amongst them that day. There were also representatives from the Gisborne Club to; whom he extended a hearty welcome. The club expected a favorable season, and they had' decided to open their No. 2 green for the benefit of those ladies who wanted to play croquet. He hoped this green would be taken advantage ot by the ladies. He. then asked Mrs. Bruce to roll up the jack-. Mrs. Bruce, before throwing the jack, expressed pleasure at the members of the Club, deciding to make a green available for croquet. Mr. H. J. Finn, Vice-President of the. Club, said that the Club- was very pleased to see the. ladies present at all times, and especially otai Thursday and Saturday afternoons. The members hoped they would freely participate in croquet, and that they would arrange “At Homes” any afternoon© they desired, the club providing the accessories. The time-honored game of President v. Vice-President xvas played. Mr. Dennett skipped the President’s teams, and Mr. F. Enre the Vice-President’s teams.
