SKIM-MILK OR WHEY?

TEST OF RESPECTIVE VALUES

The question of the respective values of skim-milk, butter-milk, and whey for pig-feeding is sometimes raised, each naving its advocates. A test bearing .on the point in question has been made at the Ontaria Experiment Station. Five groups of pigs were taken for the purpose of demonstration. To group one was fed about two and a half pounds of skim-milk to every pound of barlev and frozen wheat, to which some pollard was added. That was called meal, and every group got the same meal. Group two was fed an equal quantity in pounds of buttermilk and meal. Group three was fed common cheese factory whey in place of skim-milk, and the same ration of meal. Group four was fed whey that ■had been run through the separator to take out the butter-fat (three tenths of one per cent per 1001 b), and meal as the rest. Group five was fed the same quantity of meal and water for their arink.

The skim-milk gave the best results, and it required 2541 b of meal and 6281 b of skim-milk to make 1001 b gain. The butter-milk ran the skim-milk a neck-and-neck race. It took 2561 bof meal and 6311 b of skim-milk to make 1001 b gain. The ordinary whey group rose to 2691 b of meal and ' 7 471b of whey it make 1001 b gain. On water and meal it required 4301 b of meal to make-lOOlb 'gain..:, ;■ ~-v : This experiment sets up plain guide posts as to the feeding value of these different -forme of liquid: food, when fed in conjunction with the meals specified. Of course, if maize meal had been fed in part the re suits would probably have varied somewhat, but the comparison may he regarded as a fairly accurate indication of the divergence: in value as a food of these Yesidual products of the dairy and factory.
