WORLD’S LARGEST STEAMER.
LINER WITH ROOM FOR 5000 PASSENGERS.
For the last twelve months work has been proceeding at the Yulkan shipbuilding yard at Stettin, on a new vessel for the Hamburg-Amerika Line, which is to eclipse all previous records of oeean greyhounds for size and splendor. The new boat, which will be named the Jmperator, and will lie put into the Atlantic service, is to be larger than any craft yet afloat. In her present condition oil the slips at Stettin she presents a wonderful spectacle, appearing something like the skeleton of an 11-storeyed skyscraper in course of construction. She stands 100 ft nigh, -is nearly 90ft in the beam, and ias a length of 7loft. Her displacement will be 50,000 tons, and she will contain accommodation for 5000 passengers. In her present condition, without engines or boilers, she weighs more than a fully armed battleship. Her interior furnishings and decorations are planned on the most lavish scale possible-, and she will in every way merit the description of a “floating palace,” or, rather, a floating town. In the Berlin offices of the Hamimrk-Amerika Line there .s at present on exhibition a marvellous model of the Imeprator as she will arq ear when finished. The model is omphite down to the smallest details, both external and internal, and at night, » ben each of the thousands of tiny portholes is lit by electric light, presents a particularly charming sight.
