LIQUOR METHODS EXPOSED

A SLANDER REFUTED.

THE MAYOR OF !N VERCARCI LL’S

REPLY.

On' 26tli October the Gisborne Liquor Party, in one of their advertisements, mad© the following statement about the Mayor of Invercargill:—, “Did Mrs. Lee-Cowie’s audience know that Mr. Ott (the Mayor of Invercargill) is> deeply interested in the Wallacetown Hotel, which is just over the boundary line from the dry area, of Invercargill? In fact, it is the only hotel adjacent to Invercargill, and before No-license was carried it did an ordinary quiet suburban hotel business, but since Invercargill went dry Wallacetown: has been the busiest 'hotel! fn Southland- . .In view of the enormously increased value which h-ai& been added tq this property, one can. quite understand that Mr. Ott who is greatly concerned in the Wallacetown' Hotel, should be enthusiast!cal!” in favour of No-

License ini Invei cargill.” f'be above statement undoubtedly conveyed, and was intended to convey to the general public the idea that Mr. Ott was financially interested. A cn iir oF this advertisement was sent to the Mayor of Invercargill, and on Saturday night the. following telegram was received from him by the Rev. F. AY. Cbatterton: —

“The statement is absolutely untrue. Neither I nor my family have any monetary interest- in: any licensed hotel property anywhere in New Zealand. I reiterate ray statement that No-license has proved elf undoubted benefit to Invercargill. OTT, Mayor.”

This is only a sample of the distortions that are appearing every day.***
