Tli a appended report of the conference of committees of the Cook County Council and the Gkbrrno Borough, which were appointed to decide upon the new cemotry site, was placed before, the Cook County Council at their meeting on Monday evening last: “Your Committee have to report that they met on Monday, 23rd October, 1911. at 3 p.m., there being present His Worship the Mayor. County Cou-;:-eiliiors White and Jex-Blako and Borough Councillor Webb. The Mayor -stated that after several conferences and inspections, the joint committee had com© to the. conclusion that the most suitable site (provided it could be obtained at a reasonable price) was that piece- of land across the Taruhei u River, just above, the nrcsent cemetery' and opposite the Makaraka Domain. Your committe have to recommend that the area of 40 acres, <--r thereabout, he acquired, the question c-v the- proportion that each Council should pay towards the acquisition of the rate and the approaches thereto to be decided bv the- Council’s officials. The Mayor was deputed to approach the owner to endeavour to airange a puce prior to next meeting, of the Councils, and it was decided that the- County and Borough Engineers be asked t:> prepare- a rough estimate of the cost of a- bridge. Your committee would suggest that the question of the disposal of the- present cemetery site at A wan uni be allowed to stand in- abeyance in the meantime..” The Chairman thought that 40 acres was far too big a section to takeCr Jex-Blake. thought that people objected to having cemeteries all over the place. , . Cr. White said that the Borough Council had thought to take the land at Awapun-i at its original value, but he held that- it should only be handed over at its present dav value. The Chairman: Had land ialien in value that would have been an excellent bargain, but- as land had r isen, it would not be so-. Cr. Lysna-r understood when the sue at Awapuni was fixed and the- County Council had taken a third in it they would have to pay no more Or. White pointed out that if tne Council- retained its third at Awapuni, and paid their proportion m the new cemetery, it might have money in pocket at some future time after the transaction. _ . This suggestion was embodied m a motion, and the. Council agreed to ietain, its third in the Awapuni site, and that the Borc'ugh Council be written to the effect- that the County Council agreed to pay one-third of the amountrequired for the new site-
