BOXING.
DUNEDIN CONTESTS. (Per Press Association.l DUNEDIN, Nov. 1. Boxing contests began last night. In the interprovincial contests Leckie (Dunedin) beat G. McMinn (Canterbury) in the bantams; E. McMinn (Canterbury) and North (Dunedin) ,in the light-weights had a draw; Mains (Dunedin) beat Grundry (Canterbury) in the welter class; D. Boreham (Dunedin) beat Findlay (Canterbury) in the middle-weight; and Marquet (Canterbury) beat Matthewson in the heavyweight class.
MURPHY BEATS KELLY. DUNEDIN, Nov. 1. The Otago Boxing Association’s tournament was concluded to-night in His Majesty’s Theatre, there being a good attendance of the miblic. The principal event was the fifteen 1 round contest between Arthur Kelly (9st 6lib) and Denny Murphy (lOst 61b), which resulted in a win for the latter on. points, after a most willing contest. Kelly led in the early stages of the contest, the first, second, fourth, fifth and thirteenth rounds being in his favor, and the sixth, seventh, eleventh and twelfth rourids were even, while the eighth, ninth, fourteenth and fifteenth were- in favor of Murphy. Kelly was the cleverer boxer, but his opponent also showed clever work, and his blows contained more sting. Murphy’s weight told in the concluding rounds, Kelly tiring perceptibly. When the result was made known, Kelly said: “He was too heavy for me.” Other results were:—Teh stone novice: Semi-final, E. Moir (lOst) beat J. Botter (9.0), R. Anderson, (9.9) beat G. Landon (9.9); final, Moir (lOst) beat Anderson (9.9). Niue stone novice: Final, AA r . Parker (8.13) beat J. McLiffe (9.0). Eleven stone novice: Semi-final, AA 7 . Evans ((list) beat P. Newan (10.6); final, Styles (10.11) heat Evans (list).
BURNS ABANDONS CLAIM

The case in which Tommy Burns claimed half Lester’s lighting profits was dismissed with costs, on the application of Burns’ counsel. [Burns, in an interview in Auckland, said that Lester had broken an agreement entered into hv which he was to take half the latter’s fighting profits, as consideration for early tutoring and placing him before the public.]
