GOVERNMENT GRANTS.
MISAPPREHENSION BY COUNTY COUNCILS.
FULL AMOUNTS ASSURED
Some misapprehension has existed among local bodies relative to the Government grants for road construction, etc. The Councils were voted certain amounts, and a portion of these monies were provided, but the Councils did not know whether they would be assured of the full amounts allocated. The Cook County Council recently made inquiries regarding the matter, and a reply has been received that in all such cases the larger sum mentioned is available for expenditure. Thus, where a vote of £250 is provided on account of, say, a £IOOO grant, the Minister will be prepared to authorise up to £IOOO as soon as satisfactory proposals are submitted. The reason for allocating the smaller amount was that generally speaking it was not anticipatr ed that more than that sum would come to bo charged before March 31st.' If, however 1 , the local bodies were in a position to carry out and claim for work to the extent of the larger amount before March 31st, such claims would be duly met.
