The People’s Day at the Manawatu A. and P. Show was opened by the Governor in fine weather yesterday. Mr McGowan. New South Wales’ Premier, lias delivered his budget, the chief feature of which is proposed taxation whereby he expects to receive £200,000 from probate stamp duties and 775,000 from income tax. The total revenue last year was £13,882,485. A farmer named Broderick died at Golbourn, N.S.W., from a gunshot wound, and his son has been arrested for causing the death. Deceased was drunk and was assaulting his wife when the son interposed, and shot .in selfdefence.
The English Board of Agriculture has promised the Commonwealth Agent General to inquire into cases with a view to prosecution, where false trade descriptions are used on colonial butter.
A laborer named Robert Ferguson committed suicide by shooting himself at Lake Ohau, Dunedin, yesterday. Mr Andrew Martin lias declined to contest the Clutha seat, and Mr G. Livingstone has announced himself as a candidate for the seat at the general elections.
The overdue Italian ship Australia from Wellington has arrived at Auckland.
The Fruitgrowers’ Conference at Motueka decided that the Fruitgrowers’ Association of the Dominion federate and that the 'Hawke’s Bay executive continue to act as federal executive. A syndicate to promote aviation has been formed in Sydney. _ The half-yearly meeting of the National Bank of Australasia Avas heldi at Sydney yesterday. The profit Avas shown as £67,564, and a 6 per cent, dividend was declared. In the House of Representatives, Sydney, one member threatened to puJl another’s nose, and* the latter replied “contemptible cad!” The cattle judge* at the Manawatu A. and P. Slioav commented in high terms of praise on the cattle, and said that he attended all the shows in England Avhile on a recent visit, but at none but the two* principal ones bad he seen anything to equal those at the Manawatu Show. Ngav South Wales’ public debt, as shown in Mr McGowan’s budget, is £95,523,945, an increase during the year of £2,998,830.
