SULPHUR MINE IN FLAMES.
HUNDRED MEN IMPRISONED.
SLOWLY SUFFOCATED BY FUMES
Upwards of 100 lives are believed to have been sacrificed through an outbreak of fire in the sulphur mines at Trabonella in Sicily. The burning of the timberings in the mine caused a portion of the workings to cave in, with the result that 100 miners were imprisoned. Many courageous but unavailing attempts have been made to reach the victims, who are being slowly suffocated.
Two of those engaged, in t-lie rescue operations were caught in the flames and burned* to death, and several others were overcome by the sulphur' fumes and are now in a serious condition. Latest reports from the mine declare that the rescue parties have no hope of reaching the entombed men.
