SOME GOOD RACING
WILARI WiNS BIG EVENT.
(United Press' Association—Copyright.) (Received November 4, 6.40 pan.) PLUMING!ON, Nov. 4. After a black wintry week brilliant sunshine and a south breeze ushered in Derby Day. By noon the sun was hot and the crowd almost coualled the numbers of soma past' Cup days, and cue stands, too, were crowded. The bright weather brought out a show of spring costumes, which were seen to advantage, and the whole made a brilliant effect. Lord Dudley and Sir John Fuller’s suites each brought a big crowd of visitors. The course was in good order, though not favorable to records. The racing programme was particularly attractive. Additional interest this year was contained in the decision of the three-year premiership, also the classic race, as a guide to three-year horses running in the Cup. The mile weiglit-for-age race was also a big factor, and it was regarded as particularly unfortunate that Malt King was unable to again battle with Comedy King, especially in the light of a late gallop by Malt King this morning, when he did the first half mile in oOsecs, five furlongs in 1 2s. six in lmin 16sec, seven in i 293, mile in lmin 42f*sec, nine furlongs in lmin 57sec. Maribyrong, known as the Two-Year Derby, brought the best lot of juveniles yet seen. Altogether an exciting day’s sport was provided. The Derby proved a fine race, particularly the last half mile, and the finish was exciting, and caused great enthusiasm. The results were: Maiden Plate, 300sovs., 1 mile.— Elvanite 1. Flamen 2, Wassail 3. Eight others started. The winner led. all the way and won by a length, with third horse three lengths" away. Time: lmin 423 secs. Maribyrnong Plato, sweepstakes 25 sovs, with 1500 added, 5 furlongs.— Gold Brew 1, Loch Amos 2, Prince Traquair 3. Golden Bell was scratched. Dunard, Gauntlet, and Loch Amas were the first to show out, the next being Gold Brew, Cider, Rathkeale and Ventura. Deeside led the field across the tan from Ventura, Gauntlet, Dunard, Rathkeale, Cider, Peck and Gold Brew. The latter raced away on the extreme outside and won easily by three lengths. Deeside was fourth. Time : lmin 2£secs. Hotham Handicap, 1£ miles.—Prize Fighter 7.9 1, Mutilator 7.9 2, Adgio 7.9 3. Other starters were: Woad, Sandpath, Rifle, Gay Bob, Mountain Oak, Diabolo, Marled, Prince Lack, Posture, Isothermal and Vivacious. Prize Fighter got away first and led out of the straight, followed by vivacious, Isothermal, Posture, Woad, Multi - lator and Sandbath. At the 7 furlongs’ post Prize Fighter led from Posture by a neck. Prince Lack was three lengths away and then came Sand Bath, Woad, and Adgio last. The winner led into the straight from Prince Lack, and Sandbath. Adgio put in a fast run home, and the winner increased his lead and won bv 6 lengths, with half a head separating second and third. Time: 2min 36^secs. VICTORIA DERBY, Of 3060 sovs, 1£ miles. — Wilari (Lambert) 1 Cisco (Black) Jacamar (Pike) 5 An unnamed filly was scratched. Durbans led round the turn from Posio, Cisco. Sanskrit, Woollerinai and Jaeamar last. On the outside Woolerina ran to the front and led past, the bridge from Posio, Sanskrit, Radiator, Cisco, Jacamar, Wilari. In the last- five furlongs the field was well bunched, Jacamar lying third. Jacamar led into the straight from Piastre and Woollerina. Cisco and Milari dashed in, followed by Crown Grant and Flaith, arid a. splendid finish resulted in a win by a head, with half a length between second and third. Crown Grant was fourth, and then Flaith. Time: 2min 38Jsees. Melbourne Stakes, 1000 sovs, 11 miles.—Trafalgar 1, Beverage 2, Parisian 3. Other starters were: Flaval, Comedy King, Cadonia, Aurofodina and Lady Medallist. Flaval led off from Parisian, Aurofodina, Medallist, Cadonia, Trafalgar ai<d Beverage. The latter ran into first place at the back from Flaval. Aurofodina then drew up to Beverage. The Chestnut put in a strong gallop and caught Beverage in the straight. * Comedy King, under the whip, failed to come up, and Trafalgar, full of running, won by a length, three lengths separating other placed horses. Time: 2min 7 l-3secs. Great cheering greeted the pinner. Coburg Stakes, 300 sovs, 1 mile. — Ladies Man 8.6 1, Duke Foote 7.5 2. Thirteen others started. Won by 1£ lengths, with a head between second and third.' Time: lmin 40£secs. TRAINING NOTES. MELBOURNE, Nov. 4. • At Caulfield Riffian did a mile and ahalf in 2min Saltaire a mile in lmin 463 sec, Didus a mile in lmin 47secs, Bridge did 11 furlongs, the last five in lmin s£secs. At Flemington the weather was fine. Glue did 12 furlongs in 2min 47secs, Flavian 12 furlongs in 2min 49secs, Alarm 10 furlongs in 2min 49secs, Alarm 10 furlongs in 2min 22secs, Hartfell 11 furlongs in 2-min 35secs.
