The house of a man named Newman, at Stoke-on-Trent, Staffordshire, Avas nightly infested Avith beetles, and( a neighbor named John Ball promised to exterminate them. On the, night of 4th September he .arrived in Newman’s yard Avith a detonator capable, it is said, of blowing up tAA'enty tons of rock. He lit the fuse, and there Avas immediately an explosion Avliieh hurled Ball. Newman, and the latter’s fifteen-year-old son to the other end of the yard. Ball’s hand was shockingly mutilated, two fingers being bloAvn off. He also received 1 other injuries Avhich necessitated his immediate removal to the North Staffordshire Infirmary. NeAvman and his son received injuries to the face and arms. The former suffered so much from loss of blood that he also had to be taken to the infirmary. Athletes! After your strenuous games of.
