EGMONT GATHERING

(Per Press Association.)

HAWERA, Nov. 8. The Egmont A. and P. Association’s spring show was opened to-day in fine, but windy weather. The entries totalled 1733, as against 1867 in 1910. The rough weather and the short age of the grass, it is said, has interfered with getting the stock into condition for show purposes, hence the decrease in cattle, sheep and horses, with the exception of light horses, which were of good quality. In the cattle sections Jersey classes were well filled, and competition was keen. Ayrshires, Holstein, and Fresans were also well represented. Mr G. F. Moore was the principal exhibitor in Herefords, and practically swept the board in this class, also in fat cattle. Shorthorns were of goed quality, and competition was fair. Mr W. H. Wybourne was,, the prin : .pai prize taker in, Lincoln sheep, and S. R. Lancaster in English Leiceeters. Romneys were only fair in quality, tut competition was close. The fat sheep wt~e strong classes, and fat lambs were exceptionally good. Draught horses we e a good lot, and competition was strong, but the quality of the younger thoroughbreds and light horses was rather poor. Championships were: Shorthorns, G. A. Turner (Eltham); bull and cow and reserve champion bull and Holstein Fresian bull, Newton King .(New Plymouth), cow, W. J. Lovelock (Palmerston North), Ayrshire bull, F. Mills, reserve bull, "Brown Bros.; cow F. Mills and reserve champion. Jerseys: bull, G. Hark ness; reserve bull. A. and J. O’Donnell; cow, A. A. Ward.; reserve, cow, R. R. Lancaster; Herefords, bulls, G. F. Moore and reserve bull; Lincoln ram and ewe, W. H. Wybourne; English Leicester, ram and ewe, S. R. Lancaster; Romney ram, J. D. Hughes, ewe, H. P. Best; Shropshire Down, ewe, T. Ash • Southdown ram and ewe, Ellis Bros’ Pigs, Black Devon, sow, Mrs Weeks’ Awapum; draught mare, A. Hastie • reserve mare, F.-S. Oughton. CANTERBURY ASSOCIATION. CHRISTCHURCH, Nov. 8. The Canterbury A. and P. Association. Metropolitan Show at Addington opened to-day in favorable weather. As Ks the general rule, the day was devoted principally to preparatory work, nevertheless there was a fairly large attendance of the general public. The displays in tents were quite as numerous as a.t previous shows, and quite as varied. Only a few steak arrived on the ground to-day, but the indications are that in respect to stock the show will be quite equal to its precursors. The entries this year are slightly below those of last year, this being due largely to the unfavorable season prejudicing the sheep classes. Details of the entries for the two years are given below:—1911, 1910: Farmers’ judging competitions 39, 38; sheep, 1004, 1052 ; cattle, 178, 215 ; horses, 501, 594; pigs, 91, 75; dogs, 19, 19; dairy produce, etc., 185, 161; totals, 2017, 2154. To-day (implements ’and machinery were judged. To-morrow several competitions will'be decided, and the stock will be judged.
