OLD SETTLERS' PICNIC.
A DAY AT PATUTAHI.
AN ENJOYABLE FUNCTION.
\ memorable gathering took place at* the Patutahi Domain yesterday when the old settlers of Poverty Bay held their ■annual'"'ire-union. Quite a large number of old pioneers were brought together, men and women* who Iliad been in Poverty Bay when it was the scene of strife and trouble, when the Maori and pakeha were in conflict. They have watched the district advance with rapid strides, and in no small degree have they contributed to its prosperity. It is to these hardy pioneers film b' Poverty Bay owes its position to-day. Therefore it was a pleasing sight*to see so many of them, still hail and hearty, and enjoying themselves on this prettilv situated Domain. Nodoubt many memories were recalled, and many, of the scenes of the early davs traversed once again by the various parties who gathered under the shady trees to do justice to the ref reshments that were abundantly brought forth from large hampers. The Domain was in splendid order, and provided an ideal ground for a picnic. The Domain committee have just had a new quartermile cycling track and a straight hundred yards running track laid out which were made great use of wlben the sports came on. A splendid programme, was provided, and the various competitions aroused the keenest interest. Mr P. G. Andrew, the secretary, had all the arrangements well in, hand, and everything worked smoothly. Messrs R. and, J. Atkins, senr., and Matthew Hall greatly assisted in making the gathering a success. They collected about £oo for the creche. Mr J. A. Lucas also collected £lO in Gisborne for the same purpose. Messrs D. J. Barry. G. B. Oman and T. G. Lawless, assisted by Mrs F. J. Lysnar and Mr C. Morse, augmented the* funds considerably by giving penny rides in their motor cars. The Gisborne Band played a number of selections, which added to the pleasantness of the gathering. Mr F. '7ilkinson officiated as .starter, and Messrs D. J. Barry, G. Wildish, F. J. Lysnar, J. A. Lucas, G. B. Oman and H. Hull acted as judges. Messrs Woodward and J. Atkins had charge of the children’s events. Telegrams were received from Sir Ja.s. Carroll and Judge Jones, regretting that they were unable to attend but wishing the gathering every suecess. 'Pile Ladies Guild had charge of Die refreshments. The proceeds of the picnic will be devoted to the. Children’s Creche, and it is expected there will be a substantial amount handed over. The Mayor (Mr W. Pettie), attended, and in a happy little speech congratluated the committee on the way in which the picnic had been carried out.
