BRISBANE, Nov. 12. A cannon claimed to he from. Cap-, tain Cook’s ship Endeavour, has been found amongst the ballast of a keltdh bought from Japanese paarl-shellers. The latter state that the black boys discovered it on a reef off Cooktown. A LIBERAL GAIN. • ADELAIDE, Nov. 12. The election for the Bootlhby seat to fill the vacancy caused by the death of Mr. Batchelor, resulted in a Liberal ghin, Mr. Gordon (Liberal) polling 10,656, and 1 Mr. Jelley (Labor) 8028. LORD CHELMSFORD RETURNED. Lord and Lady Chelmsford have returned from a, visit to England. . MT LYELL STRIKE ENDED. MELBOURNE, Nov. 12. The Mount Lye 11 conference was resumed, and resulted in a signing oif the agreement previously cabled. The strike is declared off, and th men sign on on Monday, and resume, work on Thursday. The dismissed man White fights his own case in the courts. Though the Mohnt Lyel 1 miners have signed the agreement, t'he engine-drivers have not yet signed. It is expected they will sign to-day. During the strike the menn lost £35,00 Oin wages. (Received Nov. 14, 12.5 a.m.) MELBOURNE, Nov. 13. The Mount Lyell engine drivers have signed the agreement, and the strike is ended. WANT Is MORE. Ninety employees at Hudson’s waggon works have struck for an. advance of a shilling per day. A SUDDEN DESERTION. Wihen the steamer Belgio was leaving the wharf, thirty firemen and deck hands jumped ashore. The cause of the trouble is: the rigid enforcement of discipline. The deserters were arrested and four ringleaders were sentenced to fourteen days’ imprisonment. The remainder were sentenced to twelve hours imprisonment, with the loss of a , day’s pay, and placed aboard again. ANOTHER STRIKE. (Received Nov. 13, 9.35 p.m.) SYDNEY, Nov. 13. There was .another strike to-day. Two hundred slaters ceased work, and demanded an increase of ai shilling a day 7. WOOL WORKERS’ STRIKE. (Received Nov. 14, 12.15 a.m.) SYDNEY, Nov. 13. . The strike of the wool scourer's is interfering with the stock sales. The buyers are curtailing purchases, owing to the difficulty of handling the skins. A ballot of the strikers is proceeding. The Union officials are hopeful it will result in an early resumption of work.
