Mr. Long proposed, and Mr. Austen Chamberlain seconded, the nomination of Mr. Bonar Law to the leadrship of the Opposition, and he was elected by acclamation. Mr. James Buchanan, a distiller, has given the Tariff Reform League £IO,OOO in consequence of Mr. Bonar Law’s election as leader.
NEW LEADER CHEERED.
A WISE'SELECTION
(Received November 14, 11 p.m.) LONDON, Nov. 14. The House of Commons, after the Unionist appointment was made known, accorded an ovation to Mr. Bonar Law. The Liberals and Laborites cordially joined in the cheering. The Liberal newspapers declare that the Bonar Law section was wise, inasmuch as Mr Austin Chamberlain’s selection would make a non-Conformist the leader of the churchmen opposing the Welsh disestablishment, while Mr W. H. Long’s selection would have meant the defeat of Chamberlainism.
