HIGH HEELS.
THE INVENTOR DEAD. Robert E. Smiley, a centenarian resident of Queensborough,- who is dead at his home there, was one of the pioneers in the shoe manufacturing business in New York city, and is known as the inventor of the French heel for women’s shoes. Smiley established himself as a maker of fine shoes in Boston seventy-five years ago. At that time women’s shoes were made without heels, the soles of the shoes extending to the end of the shoe, similar to the soles on the shoes of very small children. Smiley conceived the idea of nailing a rather exaggerated heel to the shoes. The idea was received with great popularity by Avomn, and soon the invention revolutionised tlie making of women’s shoes.
