TE KARAKA. AN UNSEEMLY* WRANGLE. PFROM OUR SPECIAL CORRESPONDENT.] Yesterday a cricket match was played at Te Karaka between , the Alhambra Club and a Te Karaka eleven. McMahon (Karaka) won the toss, and sent the visitors in to face the bowling of himself and P. J. Sefton. The pitch (matting on turf) was very fast and inclined to be bumpy, the innings closing; for 75. Scholium, Law, and McLisky batted well and made most of the runs. McMahon took four wickets for 31 runs, Andrew 3 for 13, and Sefton 3 for 14. The To Karaka team had lost two wickets for 43 when an adjournment was made to the hotel, where the visitors were entertained at lunch. On resuming, the score was taken to 84 before the innings closed, Southcombe (an ex-Sydney lad) batting very prettily for 27, the other chief scorers being Green, Sefton and McMahon. At this stage .of the game (2.20 p.m.) an unfortunate misunderstanding arose between the captains, Scholium wanting to draw stumps at 6, while McMahon insisted that five o’clock had been agreed upon. However, after some delay, Gisborne again went" to the wickets, but, although they made desperate attempts to hit, the score at a quarter to four was 2 for 41. The scoring had been very slow, McMahon and Sefton being right “on the wicket.” An adjournment was then made for afternoon tea (kindly provided by Mesdames Foote and Dutton), and after this Scholium refused to go on unless “draw stumps” was fixed for 6 p.m. This McMahon would not agree to, so the Gisborne boys left the field, leaving the home team winners on the first innings. It is most regrettable that any unpleasantness arose. It -would have been most unlikely that Alhambra could have won by playing till five, and even if six o’clock had been arranged, the finish must have been highly interesting. The scores of the match were as follows: —Gisborne: Lang, b McMahon 2; Law, b Sefton 12; Stitchbury, b Sefton 6; Jeffreys, b Sefton 0; Scholium, b Andrew 21; McLisky, b Andrew 16; T. Atkinson, b Andrew 6; McLeod, b McMahon 0; Sail, not out 5; W. Atkinson, c Southcombe b McMahon 0; Hind, b McMahon 3; extras 4; total 75. Te Karaka: Green, c Law, b McLeod 7; McMahon, c Jeffreys, b Atkinson 19; Sefton, b Scholium 11; Southcombe, b McLisky 27; Andrew, b Scholium 0; Foote, st McLisky 4; Somervell, b McLisky 0; Morgan, b Scholium 0; Bridgman, lbw b Scholium 0; Harris, b McLisky 1; Clague, not out 0; extras 15; total 84. WARNER ILL. (United Press Association—Copyright.) MELBOURNE, Nov. 16. The English cricketers were given a civic reception. Mr. Warner is suffering from severe gastritis, and is unable to play against Victoria.
