MARKET GOSSIP. OIL-LAND BOOMIN NEW ZEALAND Letters received by London business houses interested in New Zealand mining developments refer to a great increase in the price of lands in the oil districts. At Taranaki, the chief oil centre, on the west coast of the North Island, land surveyed for oil-prospect-ing purposes is selling at £2OO an acre. Drilling operations are being conducted at three different centres. ■ These are New Plymouth, Gisborne, and Kotoku, the last-named place being on the Sooth Island. New Plymouth has a. regular and increasing oil production from steam-drilled wells. The New Zealand General Assembly, petitioned by oil men, has placed all oil-well drilling tools _ and machinery on the free list “until such time as they can he manufactured in the Dominion.” The tariffs were high, amounting to something like 25/per cent. There is a prospect of the oil market taking an increased interest in colonial oil, and there is some talk of colonial flotations before the end of the year.—“ Daily Express,” October 4th. 1911.
