The official version of the Kan go tragedy declares that the missionaries previously provoked the conflict through necessitating the iseizure of arms. These were forcibly recaptured) by the missionaries from the natives from Likoma,, but at the instance of the postmaster at Kango the weapons were returned. ’? •
Later the missionaries again landed, and the postmaster fearing another attack, summoned the party, -to stop. On refusal he fired, killing a member of the mission.
