Eleven railway trucks loaded AAith metal broke away from a train at Sleep’s Hill quarry and gathered .i speed of 40 miles an hour. They Aveie seen by the drii'er of an approaching passenger train, who rcA'ersed his engine. He AA'as too late to preA-ent a. collision, and the force of the impact crashed the locomotiA'e into the first carriage, until the smoke stack prevented further progress. The carriage fortunately Avas empty. The fireman Avas seA'erely injured, ana the driver slightly, but all the passengers escaped. They raised a testimonial to the envoi- for his presence of mind.
