NURSES FOR MAORIS.
.I>R. VALIXTINE’S INTENTION. (Per Press Association.) WELLINGTON, Nov. 22. The Wellington Hospital Board’s Committee yesterday recommended to the general meeting: "In reply to the request of natives at Otaki that a Maori nurse be employed on the staff of the Otaki Hospital, they be informed that it is the intention of the InspectorGeneral to have a Maori woman work in conjunction with a. European nurse in the district, and that such provision will, in the opinion of the Board, meet all the necessities of the case.” Dr. Valintine, Inspector-General of Hospitals, who was present at tip® Board’s meeting, said the department had found extreme difficulty, owing to the dearth' of nurses throughout the Dominion, in getting nurses who would understand these duties amongst the Maoris. For this work they required nurses, not only with hi professional attainments, hut possessing a good deal of tact. He asked the Board to believe that the department was using every endeavor to get suitable district nurses to work amongst the natives, not only in Wellington province, but in other parts of the Dominion. He felt that a great deal could be done in this respect for the Maori people. The Board adopted the committee’s recommendation.
