REASONS AGAINST NATIONAL PROHIBITION! THE LABOUR ASPECT! Do the workers realise the calamity National Prohibition would bring to them ? It means that 11,000 (ELEVEN THOU AND) braedwinners employed by the Trade on whom 40,000 WOMEN AND CHILDREN depend for support would be THROWN OUT OF EMPLOYMENT and £1,250,000 lost in wages. It means that a further 9,000 (NINE THOUSAND BREADWINNERS in other industries supported by the Trade, and on whom 35,000 WOMEN AND CHILDREN DEPEND FOR SUPPORT, would be out of work and losing £750,000 IN WAGES. National Prohibition means a loss of at least £2,000,000 A YEAR IN WAGES, and about 100,000 men, women and children looking for a new means of subsistence. It means 20,000 workers COMPETING WITH OTHER WORKERS FOR THEIR JOBS or else driven from the country to seek employment elsewhore. YOU MAY BE AMONG THEM. In the Gisborne district alone OVER 300 BREADWINNERS, directly employed by the Trade and SUPPORTING 900 WOMEN AND CHILDREN, would be thrown out of employment and there would bo a loss of £30,000 PER ANNUM in wages and 1200 MEN, WOMEN, AND CHILDREN IN GISBORNE looking for a fresh means of livelihood. National Prohibition means DISASTROUS UPHEAVAL in the LABOR MARKET, which could not be remedied again until 1920.
