TRUMPER WINS THE TOSS.
ENGLISHMEN AT THE WICKETS. FOUR FOR ONE FIFTY ONE. A BUMPY WICKET. (United Press Association—Copyright.) (Received Nov. 24, 8.5 p.m.) SYDNEY, Nov. 24. The weather was sultry this morning, and the absence of wind prevented the wicket drying satisfactorily, and the start was postponed until two o’clock, when after several rollings the pitch was somewhat improved. attendance was ten thousand. The teams were as follows: England.—Douglas (capt.), Foster, Gunn,, Hobbs, Rhodes, Mead, Hitch, Barnes, Woolley, Strudwick, and Hearne. Iremonger was twelfth man. New South AVales.—Trumper, (capt.), Bardsley, Alacartney, Cotter, Carter, Hordern, Roy Minnett, Barbour, McElhone, Folkard, Gregory. E. L. Waddy was twelfth man. Trumper won the toss, and sent the Englishmen in. Hobbs and Rhodes opened to the bowling of Macartney and Folkard. The pitch was bumpy, and a lot of time was spent in patting it down. Hobbs was the more confident of the pair,. and Rhodes early played a weak one from Folkard to the slips, where Trumper was just unable to reach it. When 15 Hobbs rashly hit a bumping ball from Folkard te Bardsley at third man, who took an easy catch. Gunn came next, and opened his account brilliantly hy cutting Folkard to the boundary. After Macartney bad bowled seven overs for 6 runs Hordern relieved him, and Macartney took the other end. Maidens followed the change, Hordern badly beating Gunn. The. latter then mis-hit a googlie to the slips for 1, and next ball Rhodes tipped to Cotter, close in slip, and this was held. Alead, who followed, was equally uncomfortable with Hordern, whose big off-breaks and leg action were completely puzzling. Cotter replaced Macartney after the latter had bowled five more overs, without further expense. The batsmen appreciated the change, and 50 appeared after seventy-three minutes.
Minnett was tried next, and Gunn gave an easy chance off him to Hordern in the slips' but he failed to secure it. A few balls later a similar chance was missed.
After they had adjourned for afternoon tea play' continued slowly, without any startling incident. The century took a hundred and forty-five minutes to compile, and Gunn’s 50 occupied two hours, and included four fours. He gave two easy and two difficult chances, all in the slips. Without adding a run lie was run out in trying to score from a short hit to point, through Mead refusing to run. Hearne followed the example of the more experienced players, and displayed extreme caution. He scored two in fifteen minutes, when lie was caught by Carter behind the wicket, off a fast delivery from Cotter. Foster joined Mead, who was playing most of the balls back up the pitch, occasionally opening out at anything loose.
The fielding was good, without being brilliant. The light failed at 5.50, when play was adjourned, the score then being four wickets down for 151. The following were the scores: —
ENGLAND —First Innings. Hobbs, c Bardsley, b Folkard 15 Rhodes, c Cotter, b Hordern 15 Gunn, run out 50 Alead, not out 41 Hearne, c Carter, b Cotter 2 Foster, not out 15 . Extras 13
Total for 4 wickets
