MR. PETTIE REVIEWS THE SITUATION. AN INTERESTING ADKRESS. During the visit of the Mayor and party to’ the Gentle Annie quarry yesterday Mr Pettie made an interesting review’ of flic position in regard to the various works upon which the borough is at present engaged. * Mr. Pettie prefaced his remarks • by statin a that he had considered it was only right that Sir James Carroll should be' afforded an opportunity to inspect the important works that were m progress. As was well known, their Parliamentary representative took a keen interest in everything that was undeitaken for the advancement of the town and district. He had also thought that the opportunity would also be a good one for members of the County Council who were also into rooted in the success of the quarry to participate in the visit to the scene cf operations. It was. he felt very desirable that they should all be fully acquainted with the works t-iat were in hand. As regards the electrical plant, which had first of all been inspected, it was hoped to show the ratepavers what could be done in that direction within the next three months. By the time, further moneys were needed lor this important work, it was hoped that it could be shown it was a' profitable concern. Touching upon the tramw'aj® rpiestion, Air. Pettie, declared that no further plant or material would be required for perhaps two years. It was not to he supposed, however, that the work would stop at that stage. What was accomplished by that date would give the ratepayers confidence as regards the matter of completing the scheme. Next the Alavor referred to the scheme for the improvement of the reads of the town, the condition of which everybody must deplore. Though it was a held bite to take the money required lor tin' - Ccnflo Annie tramway o;ir of the road improvement vote, still IVH !fat d-icv would, all agree it was the pioprr tiling to do.
