AMERICAN RACING STUD

As a result of the anti-betting legislation in America the St. James stud, one of the most famous in the United States, comprising 159 animals, is being brought to Sydney in its entirety. It arrives by a specially chartered steamer on Wednesday. Mr. Irving Wheatc-roft, the owner, declares that tne racing conditions have reached such a pass in America that there is no longer any pleasure in racing or breeding thoroughbreds. The stud includes the famous sires Cisarion and Kismet. FURTHER GOOD RAINS. SYDNEY, Nov. 27. There have been further good rains in tho wheat areas. There is a much-im-proved outlook. THE SEA MEN \S AWARD. A meeting of the Steamship Owners' Association shortly discusses the seamen's award. A leading shipowner declared that the owners had no alternative but to accept it. It would be very awkward and difficult to conduct discipline under the new conditions, it practicable at all. Another shipowner states tliat the probable result will bo the raising of freights and fares. WHITE DIVERS. The Pearlers’ Association has obtained leave to bring white divers from England to take the place of aliens. CHILDREN POISONED. MELBOURNE, Nov. 27. Altogether three hundred children were affected by sandwiches at the Maryborough school picnic. Six are still dangerously, and twenty severely, ill. RECIPROCAL TRADE. The Federal Government takes no action during the present session in the direction of establishing reciprocal trade with other Dominions. Details for negotiations at a later stage are being formulated. LABOR’S DEMANDS. (Received Nov. 28. 12.50 a.m.) SYDNEY, Nov. 27. The Railway and Tramwaynion’s .Association has pressed claims for eight shillings for an eight-hours day. Mir McGowen, in - reply, favored placing the same standard of wages as given to outsiders. It is anticipated that they will benefit by the Eight Hours Bill, which he in introducing next session-.
