SIR JAMES CARROLL RETURNED UNOPPOSED.

AN EXCITING INCIDENT AT THE LAST MOMENT.

MR. O’DOWD NOMINATES BUT WITHDRAWS.

'l'he,re was a wave of excitement about the office of Mr. Hill, the lietunn'ing Officer, yesterday morning, when it became known that Air. Sheridan had decided not to stand, but that there was some likelihood that there might be opposition from a fresh quarter to the sitting member (Sir James Carroll, K.C-M.G.) for the Gisborne seat.

Safely deposited with Mr. Hill since Friday had been the nomination'll of Sir James Carroll, who, as was mentioned in the “Times” of Saturday, also bore the signatures of fifteen nominators as under— William Pettio (Mayor). John Town ley (am ex-Alavor). Ida Eleanor Lysnar. Annie Lees Rees. James Robert Kirk. Wm. Ij. Roes. Chas. H. Ain bridge. Matthew' Hall. Janet F. McLennan. Mary A. Gordon. Mary J. Kirk. Adolphus J. Zaehariah. Alargaret Maynard, and Hcinrv Lewis.

But soon after the office of the Returning Officer opened yesterday, another nomination paper was brought forward. The nominee was Air- James O’Dowd, carrier. Kaiti. The nominators, it appears, were as follow— Janus O’Neil, slaughterman, Kaiti. Robert Leader, fisherman, Kaiti. •Tames Kennedy, labourer. Kaiti. James Aloss. carrier, Kaiti. Rupert AY. Cole, labourer, Kaiti. Joseph Simpson. labourer, AAaimii Road. Joe Aforton, labourer, Kaiti.

There was, however, a slight informalitv in connection with this nomination- The deposit was by way of cheque, which is not permitted. AA hen the hanks opened the cheque was cashed, and the nomination was immediately made complete. AA’ould Air. O’Dowd really go to the poll P This u'as the question of the hour. For some reason or another nobody seemed to think that in the end h<- really would. And so it turned out. .Hist before noon, the hour for the closing of nominations, Air. O’Dowd went to Air. Hill and withdrew. This ’eft a clear field for Sir James Carroll- who it was announced at noon had bee.m re-elected unopposed.
