NEW SOUTH WALES MAKE DISASTROUS START.
EIGHT WICKETS DOWN FOR 198
(United Press Association —Copyright.) (Received November 27, 7.45 p.m.) SYDNEY, Nov. 27. Play in the England v. New South Wales match, which had been interrupted since Friday owing to rain, was resumed this morning before an attendance of 11,000, when the weather was fine but hot. The wicket rolled out hard and played fast. On Friday the score stood with 4 wickets down in England’s first innings for 151. Mead and Foster resumed batting to Hordern aind Cotter. After a few singles Foster magnificently drove Cotter for 4, hut next ball, in an attempt to repeat it, Gregory, at cover point, brought off a remarkable catch, the ball going with lightning speed a few inches above the ground. Douglas followed!, and in Cotter’s next over Mead tipped a good length ball to Carter, and was caught. He hatted 172 minutes for 46 runs, and his stylo was more safe than, brilliant. Woolley joined Douglas, who was 20 , minutes without scoring. Trumper then dropped an easy catch off Hordern, and next hall Douglas was out leg before to the same bowler. He did not play a single forcing stroke. With Woolley and Barnes the next men together, play brightened. The former used his feet and hit with l great freedom. He lifted Hordern for 6. Two hundred appeared for two hundred and sixty-seven minutes’ play. Barnes was the next victim. Folkard bowled an off-break, which lie did not attempt to play and it took his bails. Strudwick, who followed, was bowled by a particularly fast delivery from Cotter, after scoring five. Hitch, the last man, started by pasting Cotter twice for. 4. He was then bowled by Hordern in the third over after lunch. This left Woolley not out with 43. He hatted 48 minutes and hit 5, 4’s and one 6. On. his play he was the most attractive batsman of the team. The Englishmen’s innings produced 238 runs. New South Wales started disastrously, Trumper being cleverly caught by Strudwick off Fester in the first over. McArtney, who joined Bardsley, was out lbw to Douglas, who was bowling at the other end, also, after scoring j. Bardsley was not long in following. Ho scored 24 in vigorous style, and then in trying to cut a- good length fast ball from Foster he tipped it to Striulwiejc, who held the catch. Gregory and Barbour played very carefully, and scored almost as slowly as the Englishmen, 50 taking 55 minutes. At 53 Woolley relieved Douglas, and his second hall Gregory tipped high in the slips, where Foster failed to ! reach it. Barbour was in 36 minutes , before lie scored a second run. He had been hitting hard, but the field was [ well placed. After the tea adjournment play sparkled up, and a hundred appeared in 87 minutes. Barnes and Hearne were both expensive. Douglas replaced Hearne, and irom the second hall Foster brilliantly caught Gregory in the slips. The retiring batsman scored 66 in 82 minutes by pretty cricket. Three halls later McElhone, who had joined Barbour, was out leg before to Douglas, without scoring. _B, arbour played confidently, hut when 37 Hitch bowled him with a perfect length, and very fast ball. Hordern joined partnership with Minnett. The former was uncomfortable and at 3 he was caught by Gregory, substitute for Douglas, off‘Hitch.. Folkard, the next man, was bowled with a splendid ball from Foster at 6. Minnett was playing an excellent innings. without taking any liberties. He scored’ all round the wicket, and l reached 50 for 75 minutes’ play. The English .fielding and returning was not equal to the standard of previous teams.
