LICENSING COMMITTEE.
QUARTERLY MEETING
The quarterly meeting of the Gisborne Licensing Committee was held yesterday. Present: 'Messrs W. A. Barton, S.M. (chairman), A. Dewing, 1). Hepburn and M. McLeod. Sergt. Hutton reported that the conduct of hotels in the Gisborne Borough, for the past quarter had been good, and no complaint had been made, 'the upkeep was all that could he desired, and the cleanliness and appearance of all were most satisfactory. New stabling had fveen erected at Patutahi and Muriwai hotels, which was a vast improvement and added to the appearance and surroundings, besides supplying a long felt want. Surprise visits had been paid to both town and coun- . :-v houses on week days and Sundays, and no breaches of the law had been observed..
Satisfactory reports were 'also submitted by Constable O’Hafloran regarding the Tarawera and Te Pahue hotels.
Regarding the hotels in the Wairoa astriot Constable Kirby reported that they were all clean and well kept. He pointed out that the following requirements were necessary: Wairoa Hotel: Fire escapes inadequate; back portion, which is old and dilapidated, requires renovating or doing away with ; con-
veniences should be removed to the back of the building. Frasertown Hotel : Permanent ladder or stairway required from balcony to ground ; sanitary arrangements not good. Metre re Hotel : ’The outside cf the old portion could do with a coat of paint; dining room wants painting and papering; a urinal is required. Mohaka Hotel : Yt airway required from balcony to ground; there arc seven beds in five rooms upstairs in the old portion of the hotel and no fire escapes: papier on walls torn and dirty, and flooring rotten ; recommend this old portion he either done away with or thoroughly renovated.
Tlie chairman said that the reports were very .satisfactory. It was agreed that the chairman should visit all hotels in the Wairoa district and until tlie inspection was made the recommendations were allowed to stand over.
Mr Burnard, who appeared for tlie licensee of the Frasertown Hotel, said; it he had been asked by his client to protest most emphatically against a paragraph contained in the report of C'-iistable Kirby, which contained a comment i.u a case which was to come he tore the Court. The chair;iicu sen that be thought it was unnecessary to have the paragraph read, ami he had instructed the clerk to that ''fleet. He thought the Constable’s action was most reprehensible, and he /had no right to .make the remain.! dcs Ile did. Mr Barnard said that when the report was shown to Mr Johnston by the Constable it did not contain the lxiragraph, which made the position all the more aggravating. The chairman said that the- case referred to had been dismissed. He would have a letter written to the 'Unstable on the matter. - An application for a transfer of the license of the Tar"worn Hotel from T-dm Moxandor Mackav to {lee. Edward Ravinen'd Kirk was granted.
