THE DEFENCE FORCESWELLINGTON. December 5
The Commandant of the Forces (General Gedley) has given instructions that as far as possible the- officers and non-commissioned officers of the permanent military forces should between now and the end of the year take any annual leave they may be entitled to. Their work, it is pointed out, has during the year been practically niglit and day, in order to bring the new force up to its preset stage of organisation., and he does not wish anyone to forfeit his leave for the year. Early in January training will commence in earnest, and all officers and non-commissioned officers will be required to- be constantly on: duty from that- time to enable the training to be carried out with every regard to local circumstances and the industries of the country. During the period from now to the end of the year the woric of equipping, arming, and clothing the forces will he gone on with, so as tube- ready for the training that vvid 1 lie commenced early in January. The' annual meeting of the New Zealand Shipping Company was held today. The directors recommend a dividend of 10s for the- year, with a bonus of 2s 6d per s-hare; £16,036 was carried forward. The assets were shown at. £1.506.347. and the year’s profit at £55,349; £20,000 was transferred-to tho insurance funds, which is now £70,000.
ELECTRIC LIGHT REJECTED. FEILDING, Dec. 5
A poll of ratepayers was taken today on tho proposal!/) borrow £IO,OOO to* instal an electric lighting system in the Borough. The proposal was lost by 264 to 217.
CONDUCTOR’S 1 APPEAL UPHELD WELLINGTON, Doe. 5.
The appeal by Conductor George Whit- against bis dismissal, on the ground of altering his starting number, was resumed .before the Tramway Appeal Board to-day, Dr. McArthur, S.M., presiding. After hearing evidence by Inspector Fuller, fetuart, Richardson, manager, and two photographers, the Con it hell', that the evidence did not sustain the charge of altering the my bill and the appeal was upheld.
