The Gisborne Times. PUBLISHED EVERY MORNING. THURSDAY, DECEMBER 7, 1911.
I complete arrangements for the display to-night of | j the results of t-o----j I day's polling throughout the DominI ion. Easily the best effort that has been made in this direction in this town previously, it is confidently claimed, was made by this journal on the occasion of the last general municipal elections. Not only was the huge board that was placed over the ‘‘Times” balcony brilliantly lighted, but the results, it was generally acknowledged, stood out with surprising distinctness. For to-night, however, j the arrangements in this direction will I lie found to mark a very great advance oven on what was accomplished last j April. Next to distinctness in connec- j tion with displays of this nature! promptness in exhibiting each result as j soon as it is available is, of course, a 1 very material factor towards success, j In order that there shall lie as little! delay as possible in this matter, the 1 services of a large staff of assistants have, therefore, been requisitioned. What is more, the ‘‘Gisborne Times.’-’ recognising that there may be a lull now and again in connection with the receipt of results from other electorates, has decided to enter upon a novel departure, which, it trusts, will be the means of helping the time to pass pleasantly for the large crowds which may be expected to watch the results from in front of its establishment. For the purpose of entertaining the electors, the City Band has been engaged, to give a concert, starting at 8.30 p?m. from a grandstand erected alongside tho “Times” office. Among other ntI tractive selections which appear on a programme that has been specially arranged for, the occasion will * : March. “Victoria”; waltz, “Queen of the North”; march, “Ivia Ora”: fantasia, “Victory” ; two-step, “It's on the Board” ; march, “A Knight of the 20th Century” ; intermezzo, "Rococo”;! selection, “Songs of Scotland” ; and j grand finale, ‘‘We Won’t Get Homo Till Morning!” The band, which is always an exceedingly popular institution, may bo expected to give a particularly fine performance to-night, on account of the fact that it lias now for some time past been practising assiduously in view of the approaching contest. Given fine weather all who avail themselves of tho opportunity of watch-

But whether they will V? deiver'd before Friday is anoih-r matter. Mr. Renner, it is known, has h- < Sc: ally informed that the Department sees no reason why its officers should examine newspapers in of meek ballot papers. His reply is that in the ca sc-, i f the local papers the fact, that they contained mock ballot papers was kir wn to the Department. But all the same the official statement of tire position was transmitted to the various district p ?t offices yesterday, and the question as to whether the papers would be released would therefore deix-nd upon whether the various officers-in-charge after ail the protests that have been made on the •subject were content to make ;h-:;:-sel-ves believe that they were :m: aware that the papers contained such an advertisement ! Tt is all too funny for words.
