POVERTY BAY CLUB

The semi-final for the Caul ton medals was rowed off last evening on the Waimata course, when J. Prickett, E. O’Neill, C. flail, and M. Pooling defeated Y. Somervell, \V. Hall, F. Snowden, and A. Poole after a good race. After the dead heat of the night before, these two crews went out determined to make the race a hard one, and as it proved a most exciting finish resulted. The river was very choppy, and with the strong westerly wind made the goiug very hard. Both crews got off well at Ahe start, and at the first bond were still on level terms. A little further on, however, Somervell had assumed a lead of a canvas, but near the junction of the rivers the crews wore again racing level. Prickett hero livened up considerably, and at once began to draw away from his opponent. Passing under the bridge Prickett was leading bv a length, and from then out the race 'became a struggle for supremacy. Somervell made several attempts to draw up level, but Prickett kept, a steady swing, and maintained his lead to the finish. A very interesting race should eventuate this evening, when the fi.nal takes place between Prickett’s crew and Hansen’s. DUTHIE AND CO.’S TROPHY.

The first double-sculling races of the season, for Messrs. Duthio and Co.’s troplrv, will commence on Saturday, December IG. ’I lie following crews have bean selected to compete —Y . Hull and R. GISBORNE CLUB. The following is the _ result of the semi-final in the Pettio Fours (A grade) rowed last evening : Hamilton (stroke), Richards, P. Fromm, and Bright beat Coleman (stroke), Busby, Brabant and Dotls. Hamilton took the lead from the word '•'go” and at the bridge had a. lead of a length, which he maintained to the finish.

McConville (stroke), Gerrard, Perry, 0. AYylie beat C. Somervell (stroke), Daniels, Kaye and Fraser. This was a very exciting race. At the junction McConville had a lead of alx>ut a length, which he kept till near the finishing point, when Somervell spurted, but just failed to catch the_ judge’s eye, who gave the verdict, against him by a quarter of a, length. In the B. grade for Cox’s Trophies, Winter, Gardiner, Evans and Cammock beat G. H. Pnflett, Parsons, Haultain, Maynard by half a length, after a close race.

Fa ram (stroke) G. Fromm, 6. "Winter, and A. Quigley "beak Quigley (stroke), DucLson, Stevenson and Street by a length. The finals will he rowed on Friday evening, when in the A grade MeConvillo meets Hamilton and in the B grade Winter rows Far am, and some close races should result.
