“ NOME RULE ” FOR MAORIS.
MR. KAIHAU’S AMBITION. (Special to Times.) TE Tv IT IT I. Dec. 5. While at Kio Kio I had a chat with Mr. Den arc Kailiau, wlm produced a plan, of the proposed Miaori Parliament House, to he built at Ngaraawuhia, at a cost of STOOO- “1 have brought this matter before the Native Minister rind Parliament on several occasions,” he said, “but have received no definite satisfaction. However, Government or no Government, this House is going to be erected.” The proposal was that a renresentative should he nominated from each hapu, who would rep recent his tribe. He considered that the time had arrived when the Maori should have Home Rule. This Parliament had been prophesied by the “King”* father many years ago, and the time had now arrived when lie should' bring the project about. The Parliament would lie the forerunner of a model Maori town-, where young Native boys and girls would be given a technical education of the various trades.
On being aslmd if the who'e matter was not a dream, Mr. Kailiau indigmantlv replied tha it was not. There were 10,000 Waikato Natives a 16ns who had agreed to be taxed at the rate of £1 per head. The “King” had decided to devote a considerable amount of the “raana” that had been bestowed on him by his people in the form of endowments.
