SAVINGS BANKS IN POST OFFICES.
Where the Federal Government has a whip hand over the State Governments is that it controls the post offices that house the State savings banks. Writes the' Melbourne Argus: In the recent public utterances if the Prime Minister (Mr Fisher) unmistakable notice to quit has been given to those State Savings Banks which have hitherto found accommodatin’ and assistance in the country post offices. There have been vigorous protests from Victoria, but it- was the complaint of the Labor Premier of New South Wales (Mr McGowen) on the same point that led Mr Fisher to make a statement on the subject. The eviction of the Savinsgs Bank agencies from the post- offices does m t seem do Mr Fisher, to be mi act < f aggression. “There is plenty • i rrom,” be said recently, “for both Federal rod State Savings Banks.” He says in effect. to the Savings Banks, “There is plenty of room; out you get.” “After all,” added Mr Fisher, “the convenience of the Australian people should be the first consideration of ad public men. It will be some time before any difficulty can arise in respect of tlie State Savings Banks, and we are prepared to come to any reasonable arrangement, if the States think it necessary to approach the Federal Government.” f
