SWEET PEA SOCIETY.

INITIAL SHOW

A PLEASING DISPLAY

The Gisborne Sweet Pea Society hold their initial shmv at Whinra-y’s Hall on Saturday afternoon and evening. The hall was most tastefully arranged, and the various exhibits were displayed to the best advantage. A number of entries failed to come to hand, but despite this fact a really pleasing exhibition of sweet pea blooms resulted. Mr. A. Thomson lent a number of pot plants, which were arranged on the tables, and added to the attractiveness of the display. Messrs. J. Kerr and A. It- Muir also forwarded collections of sweet pea blooms for exhibition only. The class for twelve bunches distinct varieties, for Mr. J. McKee’s medal, was won by Mrs. J. Clark, Mr. G. Stevenson being second. The special pnzo for the best hunch of sweet peas in the open classes was sectored' by Mr H. H. Lockie. Airs. J. Clark was also successful in winning Mr- A. Thomsons special prize for tho best- bunch in the show. The silver cup presented by Mr A. -T. Cox for the mast successful exhibitor in the amateur classes was annexed bv Mr. H. H. Lockie, with six points. Mi's. E. Wyles being second with two points. . • .. The Mayor (Mr. W. Pet tie) owned the show, and in so doing congratulated the members of the society on the success of their first effort. He thought the formation of such a society, would encourage people to improve tlicir gardens. and 1 would therefore result in improving the appearance of the town. He hrw*ed the show would be a success financially. During the afternoon and evening there was a large number of visitors to the show', and the various exhibits were much admired. A word of praise is due to the secretary (Mr- J. Kerr), who had all the general arrangements in first-class order.
