A QUESTION OF RATING.
- W \IKOHU COUNTY'S PROPOSITION. The chairman of the "Waikohu County Council, Mr V. D. S MacDonald, H.P., mentioned the system of rating on unimproved values at yestei - dav’s meeting of the Council. He luad, he said, not gone into tho matter, but it had been suggested to him that the rating in the county could he mere equitably arranged, .and that the system of rating on unimproved values might- be considered. I ersonallv he thought the matter might bo gone into and its merits ascertained, and lie would suggest that a committee consisting of Crs. Hutchinson, Lewis and Telford he appointed to report at the next meeting of the Council. Qr. Hutchinson : Is any one dissatisfied with the present system of rating. Lewis pointed out that the Crishorne Borough Council had adopted ! the system, and that it was coming ! into great- favor everywhere. I Or. Hutchinson asked what steps it j would he necessary to take to establish I the system. , , The chairman said it would be 110i cessarv to take a poll of ratepayers 1 who really were the people who would i sav if the’system were to he adopted. 1 Cr. Hutchinson said there was not i much unimproved land in the countv, ! and opined that it- was the people of To Kara-ka who wanted the system introduced. n , ~ Cr Lewis thought that the iatm_, should ho more evenly shared, and he ' felt that the townspeople were not at all in clover. Or. Hutchinson: AVlule other peopie are growing buttercups! Tho chairman said it was not necessary for thorn to take any steps m the matter that day, but that they might be called upon to give it their consideration at some future time. The matter then dropped.
