PATHE PICTURES.
A crowded house greeted the new pro- * gramme of pictures at the theatre on Saturday evening. The programme included a number of good subjects, perhaps the best, from an instructive point of view, was the scientific film describing the birth, life, and death of plants. By the aid of powerful microscopes those views were taken, and showed, ihe progress depicted 800 rimes as fast as reality, the different processes through which a seed passed before reaching maturity. A drama of great spectacular effect was “Queen of Nineveh,” and the well-known story was shown complete in all details. “Shadow and Sunshine,” a drama of the Southern States of America in the old slave days, contained ' most human interest. Sunshine was the ' little daughter of a white planter, while Shadow was her equally small slave. The same feelings swayed both children in their love for a beautiful white doll, which the planter’s daughter owned, and while a party was in progress one night, the little black girl contrives to steal away 'with the doll, and falls asleep 1 crooning over it in her hut home. A groat cry is raised at the loss of. the doll, and in order to shield her piccinny the black mammy burns the doll, and persuades her child that she has dreamt possessing it. Throughout the acting of the two children, especially the colored one, is very good- ’ The ‘ ‘Cider Industry” was a good scenic study, and Pathe’s Australasian Gazette included many good views, tho best being _ one showing the opening of the Royal Yacht Squadron’s season in Sydney Harbor. “The Gipsy” was another good drama, and comedy subjects were “Her Words Came True,” and “Cure for Dyspepsia.” Tho programme 'will be repeated this evening.
