SPORTS PROTECTION,
[per press association.] HASTINGS, Dec. 20. A meeting was held in Hastings yesterday afternoon for the purpose of forming a branch of the New Zealand Sports Protection League. Sixty persons were present, representing all branches of sport. It was decided 1 to form a Hawke’s Bay centre. There are 10,000 members of the League in Hawke’s Bay. The election of officers resulted as follows: President, Mr. G. P. Donnelly; vice-presidents, Messrs E. H. Williams, F. Logan, Geo. Hunter, M.P., Frank Gordon, G. R. King, H. M. Campbell, M.P., R. D. D. McLean, Leonard Storey, and W. H. Hartgill. AN INDISCREET INSPECTOR. WELLINGTON, Dec. 20. The City Council had a discussion last night over a request by the Tramways Union to remove an inspector. Tlic Appeal 'board decided against this official in a case which lie had brought against the employer. By a majority of one the Council in committee decided to transfer the inspector to another position on the ground of want of tact. A further discussion followed, and the resolution was upheld by the easting vote of the Mayor. Notice was immediately given to rescind it. During the debate mention was made of threats by the Union, which were denied, but it is also,. stated that the Union had held meetings on the subject, and 1 if the Council does not take action which satisfies them, further meetings will follow. PAYMENT OF TEACHERS. A new, and for school teachers in the Wellington) education district, a more convenient _ system of monthly payment of salaries is to he adopted. Under the present arrangements salaries are paid by separate cheques sent from the head office, Wellington, to the head teachers, wihoi distribute them to the staffs. ' Under the new system each amount will be deposited monthly at the Bank of New Zealand. The bank will arrange for distribution of credits to branches. Head teachers will present cheques (supplied by the Government to the staffs), who will present their own drafts to _ the banks and receive t-heir due salaries. ALLEGED THEFT. WELLINGTON, Dec. 20. To-day Frederick 'William Green, formerly clerk and librarian of the Wellington Working Men’s Club and Literary Institute, was committed to trial on a charge of stealing £175 15s 9d of the club’s funds. Bail was allowed. WIDOW’S PENSIONS. The Widows’ Pensions Act, 1911, comes into operation on the first of January next. Application forms for pensions are now obtainable on personal application to the various registrars of old age pensions throughout the Dominion. The qualifications require that all must be British subjects resident in New Zealand for six months preceding tlie date of application, each having at least one child) under 14 dependent upon her, of whom she is the parent. The rates of pension are: One child, £l2 per annum; two, £18; three, £24; more than three, £3O. These rates are subject to reduction on account of annual income.
