JUNIOR REPRESENTATIVE match

HAWKE’S BAY v. POVERTY BAY

Thb first match . between junior teams representing Hawke’s Bay and Poverty Bay ' commenced at 'Victoria- Domain, yesterday. The Hawke’s Bay players' arrived by the, s.s. Wimmora* yesterday morning, and play commenced at. 10.30 p.ni.; Tho match was played ;on the. concrete pitch. Perfect weather pi evailed'when J. Mclasky, w T ho captained.‘the. home' team, won the toss from if. Reeves, who led the Napier men, an 4 sent.'Hawke’s Bay' to- the wickets .v This was a questionable piece of judge ment, but. fortunately 'it came off: The) Hawke’s Bay lads, who apparently had not completely recovered from the effects of the sea trip, found the concrete pitch too fast for them, and made a poor stand in their initial essay with the bat. D. McLeod and W. .Atkinson were in fine bowling trim, the former’s leg-breaks proving disastrous to the visitors. With the exception of Dan-vers-hind Anderson, none of the batsmen readied double figures, and. the innings closed for 78. The fielding of the Poverty Bay lads was smart and: On going to the wickets Poverty Bay made a\ feeble start, six wickets being down for 93 runs. R. Gartshore, the High School colt, who was seventh on the batting list, put a different complexion on the game. He opened confident!" and commenced to pile on the runs, at a brisk rate by clean, crisp strokes. He was well supported, by Turuk-i Pere, the Nelson College representative, and the pair completely demoralised the bowling, which up to this period, had been very steady. After scoring 83, Gartsliorewwas caught'by Anderson off Ashby. Paaka Turei joined Pare, and the run-getting;.was continued: With his score at 61, Pere was caught appoint off Danvers, after playing excellent cricket for. his runs. Turei continued to show good form,.and with H. Muir, the last main, put on 26 runs, when the former was taken by Reeves off Schofield. He made nice strokes all round in running-up his score of 49, and Muir shaped so well while making his 17, not out, that one could not help thinking that he deserved a higher place on the batting list. Seed and Danvers, were the most successful of the ten visiting bowlers tried, none of whom came out with flattering figures. 7 The game will be resumed at 1.30
