THE FIGURE IN WHITE.
AX ADVENTURE WITH A LUNATIC Weird and terrifying was the earlv morning experineee of a motor mail van driver, as he was proceeding through a lonely and hilly road near Linlithgow, on liis journey from Stirling to Bathgate. As lie was speeding along at about 2.30 a.m. lie was surprised to descry in the darkness ahead a sort of apparition—an uncanny figure in white—dashing front one side of the load to the other. Hie driver sounded the hooter, but the figure remained in the way, and after dodging about, came to a halt in front of the approaching vehicle. There was nothing else for the driver to do but to clap on the brakes and pull up. Hi s brio-fit liead-lights gave him a better view”of the strange being, and fie found fiis progress had been barred by a man wearing a pair of trousers, over which he had placed a long, white shirt The man was obviously bereft of his senses, for as he stood there gazing stupidly at the glaring lamps he swung an iron chain round his head. The driver having recovered from his surprise, restarted the engine. but the man jumped on the footboard, and kept swinging the chain while he fought hAh tJie shadow on the glass screen, and screamed incessantly. The driver proceeded as well as he could, but near Falkirk the madman jumped off the motor and hurried away into the shadows. A horse, however. was quickly procured, and the lunatic was subsequently captured.
